How to Locate an Appliance Model and Serial Number

When reporting an appliance problem, you may be asked to provide the appliance’s brand, model number, and serial number.

This information helps HomeWorks Property Management and the assigned technician:

  • Identify the exact appliance

  • Locate compatible replacement parts

  • Check warranty or recall information

  • Determine whether parts should be ordered before the appointment

  • Reduce delays and repeat service visits

What Does the Label Look Like?

The model and serial numbers are usually printed on a sticker, label, or small metal plate attached to the appliance.

The label may include:

  • Manufacturer or brand name

  • Model number

  • Serial number

  • Manufacturing date

  • Electrical information

  • Gas type or fuel information

Please take a clear photo of the entire label. Make sure the letters and numbers are visible and not blurry.

Refrigerator or Freezer

Check the following locations:

  • Inside the refrigerator compartment

  • On an interior side wall

  • On the ceiling of the refrigerator compartment

  • Near or behind the crisper drawers

  • Along the door frame or door jamb

  • Inside the freezer compartment

  • On the back of the appliance

Start by checking inside the refrigerator before attempting to look behind it.

Washing Machine

Front-Loading Washer

Check:

  • Inside the washer door

  • Around the door opening

  • Along the interior door frame

  • Near the rubber door seal

  • On the back of the washer

Top-Loading Washer

Check:

  • Under the lid

  • Around the lid opening

  • Near the top edge of the washer cabinet

  • Behind or beneath the control panel

  • On the back of the washer

Dryer

Check:

  • Inside the dryer door

  • Around the door opening

  • Along the door frame

  • Near the lint filter opening

  • Inside the drum area

  • On the back of the dryer

Please do not pull the dryer away from the wall if doing so would require disconnecting the electrical cord, gas line, or exhaust vent.

Dishwasher

Open the dishwasher door and check:

  • Along the left side of the door frame

  • Along the right side of the door frame

  • Across the top edge of the door opening

  • On the interior door liner

  • Along the interior side wall

The label is commonly visible when the dishwasher door is fully open.

Do not remove the dishwasher’s front panel or attempt to pull the dishwasher out of the cabinet.

Stove, Oven, or Range

Check:

  • Around the oven door frame

  • Along the sides of the oven opening

  • On the lower portion of the oven door

  • Inside or behind the bottom storage drawer

  • Beneath the cooktop, when it can be safely lifted

  • On the back of the appliance

For many ranges, the easiest location to check is behind or beside the lower storage drawer.

Do not pull a gas or electric range away from the wall.

Cooktop

Check:

  • Under the cooktop surface

  • Along the underside of the unit

  • Inside the cabinet directly below the cooktop

  • Near the electrical or gas connection area

Do not disconnect or lift the cooktop unless it is specifically designed to be safely lifted by the resident.

Microwave

Check:

  • Along the left or right side of the door frame

  • Inside the microwave door opening

  • On an interior side wall

  • On the back of a countertop microwave

  • Underneath the control panel area

For an over-the-range microwave, do not remove the microwave or attempt to access areas that require tools.

Garbage Disposal

Check:

  • On the side of the disposal

  • On the bottom of the disposal

  • On a label attached beneath the kitchen sink

Use a flashlight if necessary. Do not place your hand inside the garbage disposal.

Range Hood or Exhaust Fan

Check:

  • Behind the removable grease filter

  • On the underside of the hood

  • Inside the hood housing

  • Along an interior side wall

Only remove a filter when it can be removed safely without tools.

Water Heater

Check:

  • On the front or side of the tank

  • Near the manufacturer’s warning labels

  • Near the upper or lower access panel

  • On the exterior cabinet of a tankless unit

Do not remove access panels or touch electrical, gas, or plumbing connections.

Furnace or Heating Unit

Check:

  • On the exterior front panel

  • On an exterior side panel

  • Inside the front cover, only when the cover is designed for normal resident access

  • Near the burner or blower compartment

Do not remove screwed or sealed panels.

Tips for Taking a Clear Photo

For the best results:

  1. Use a flashlight if the label is in a dark area.

  2. Gently wipe away dust or grease without damaging the label.

  3. Hold the camera directly in front of the label.

  4. Make sure the photograph is in focus.

  5. Check that every letter and number is readable.

  6. Take more than one photo when necessary.

  7. Include a photo of the entire appliance in addition to the label.

Important Safety Instructions

Do not move, pull out, disconnect, disassemble, or remove panels from an appliance to locate its identification label.

Do not disturb:

  • Gas supply lines

  • Electrical wiring

  • Water supply hoses

  • Drain hoses

  • Dryer exhaust vents

  • Hardwired electrical connections

When the label cannot be located safely, submit clear photographs of the front, sides, controls, and interior of the appliance. HomeWorks Property Management or the assigned technician may be able to identify the appliance from those photographs.

Information to Submit

Please provide:

  • Type of appliance

  • Manufacturer or brand

  • Model number

  • Serial number

  • A photo of the complete identification label

  • A photo of the entire appliance

  • A photo or video showing the reported problem

  • A photo of any displayed error code
